How to make great coffee

Making great coffee is easy with a fresh coffee beans, a grinder and plunger. You do not need a $1,000 espresso maker.

My definition of great coffee is a full, flavoursome brew that has some body to it. Great coffee is not bitter, needing several teaspoons of sugar just to make it drinkable!

Things you will need:

  • kettle (duh!)
  • fresh coffee beans — your choice
  • coffee grinder — I use a Sunbeam coffee grinder
  • coffee plunger — I like Bodum plungers
  • mug, teaspoon
  • sugar/milk to taste.

How to make great coffee

  1. Boil the kettle. After it has boiled, let the water cool for a couple of minutes — you want the water just below boiling point, otherwise it will burn the coffee and give a bitter, foul taste.
  2. While the water is coming off the boil, grind the coffee beans on a coarse grind suitable for use in a plunger — the fresher the better.
  3. Place around two heaped teaspoons of coffee in the plunger for each person. Pour in the water, folding in the coffee grinds. Stir and place the lid on the plunger, but do not push down the filter yet.
  4. Wait for at least four minutes for the coffee to brew. I often allow it to brew for 10 minutes or more (make sure your plunger is thermally insulated so that the brew does not go cold).
  5. Push down the plunger and allow the coffee to sit for another minute or so to allow any remaining sediment to drop to the bottom of the plunger.
  6. Pour the coffee into a mug, adding sugar and milk to taste.
  7. Enjoy!

The above steps should make a full and flavoursome coffee with some body, that is not bitter.
