Driving Duck Creek Road to O’Reilly’s

Duck Creek Road is a great track to try if you are new to four wheel driving, or only have a soft roader or SUV. With the drought-breaking rain in recent years, Duck Creek Road has become sufficiently rough to warrant carefully thinking about where you plant your wheels, but not so challenging that you are likely to get stuck or seriously damage your vehicle. I recently took the family on a fourmore »

Visit to Kondalilla National Park — photos

Kondalilla National Park is a great place for a walk through the bush, but don’t expect four wheel drive trails in this national park. We had not been planning to visit Kondalilla National Park. Rather, we were driving home from somewhere else and thought the my girls needed to get out for a run. Spotting the sign, we headed down there. We visited on Easter Saturday and the car park was bedlam – fortunately wemore »

Tasmania road trip — the best holiday ever?

During the 2010/2011 Christmas/New Year period, my family had the best holiday ever. I did a road trip from Brisbane to Tasmania and back. My family flew to Tasmania and we met there for a holiday around the Apple Isle. For various reasons, I have only just got around to writing about it. During the coming weeks I will write more stories about the road trip, but I am back-dating the published dates tomore »

Visit to Maleny Cheese and Maleny Dairies

Maleny Cheese is a good place to visit if you want to buy some great cheese. However, with our young children in tow, we were hoping to also get some information on the cheese-making process. If you are seeking an entertaining/educational experience for your children as well as quality local produce, try Maleny Dairies instead — the dairy farm up the road. We visited Maleny Cheese on 7 April 2012 — Easter Saturday. Hoping to be able to sharemore »

Camping gear checklist — revised and updated

I have updated my camping gear checklist to reflect changes in my camping kit as a result of losing a lot of gear in the Queensland 2011 flood, but also changing my preference for gear based on our camping experience. The biggest changes are away from gas stoves/lanterns to Coleman dual fuel appliances, and away from a huge tarp that covers our tent, to a smaller tarp for eating under. I like to packmore »

Visiting Harry’s Hut and the Cooloola Recreation Area

In the 10 or so years that my wife and I have been holidaying at Boreen Point and Noosa, Harry’s Hut has always been a destination that has enticed, but eluded, us. Harry’s Hut is in the Everglades at the southern end of the Cooloola Recreation Area, which itself is the southern section of the Great Sandy National Park. Harry’s Hut is accessible either via four wheel drive or by boat. We hadmore »

Holidaying in Boreen Point

Boreen Point is one of those places that you think have almost disappeared. You know the kind – a tiny little township, a bit ramshackle, but with a quiet waterfront-village feel. It is at the total opposite end of the spectrum to Hastings Street at Noosa – which for many people is a great thing! Boreen Point is situated on Lake Cootharaba, which is about 20 minutes drive north west of Noosa. Lakemore »
